There is no question that choosing electronic cigarettes over traditional tobacco cigarettes has its benefits, but understanding the concept of cartridges vs. cartomizers will help smokers maximize the benefits. Even National Geographic has posed the idea that using electronic cigarettes can provide major differences for the environment, because it does not contribute to landfill consumption, create litter, or endanger animals as well as other people in the surrounding.

All of these will only be achieved once smokers understand the benefits they can receive from electronic cigarettes. Every vaper will eventually have to refill cartridges, which in the electronic cigarette industry can be quite vague. Therefore, understanding how the various types of cartridges eventually work can help vapers avoid experiencing an unsavory flavor with their electronic cigarettes. This type of condition would be unacceptable, especially if the intention is to use electronic cigarettes for the long-term.

Since cartomizers are based on predominantly newer technology, the only way to validate if they are better is to understand the concept of cartridges vs. cartomizers.

The Take on Cartridges

The electronic cigarette industry and majority of vapers share a common notion that cartridges are designed for older e-cigarettes. In fact, between 2010 and 2011, this was the type of cartridge that was in use by almost all types of electronic cigarettes that was being sold in the market. Some vapers now believe that this type should be avoided when choosing refill cartridges because of the older technology behind its manufacture.

Even beginners in electronic cigarette use can easily distinguish cartridges from cartomizers. Normally, cartridges are identified by their physical features, which commonly means the presence of an exposed opening at the bottom portion of the device instead of a screw threading that is commonly seen with cartomizers. The absence of the screw threading is based on the fact that there is no other attachment that is needed after the cartridge.

Looking into the opening at the bottom portion of the device will reveal the presence of a tiny wet sponge material. Manufacturers use cartridges as a component in electronic cigarettes that make use of the three-part configuration. The assembly is done by connecting a component known as an atomizer at the threaded end of the battery and then pushing the cartridge over the top side of the atomizer.

One of the greatest benefits of cartridges is that they are extremely affordably priced due to the fact that their production costs almost nothing. The main drawback that has been expressed by most vapers is that they are unreliable performers, which means that the quality of the vaping experience will not be consistent and therefore far from being satisfactory.

This can be quite a letdown especially for heavy smokers who are transitioning to electronic cigarettes, and must be considered when weighing cartridges vs. cartomizers. Aside from the quality of the vapor produced, there is also an issue of inconsistency. Many electronic cigarette manufacturers will claim that cartridges for e-cigarettes would usually correspond to about half a pack of traditional tobacco cigarettes for every cartridge.

The reality though is that most of the time, they are only equivalent to about 4 to 5 traditional tobacco cigarettes per cartridge at the most, making them quite costly. Vapers also have to be aware of the possibility of cartridges expanding and leaking in warm environments.

Issues on Cartomizers

For majority of newer electronic cigarettes being released into the market, cartomizers seem to be the prevalent choice. Although there are still some manufacturers that continue to release some electronic cigarettes that use disposable cartridges, they are now considered a minority in the industry. Cartomizers are essentially the result of continued development in the electronic cigarette industry, which is fairly young, compared to that of the tobacco industry.

The term cartomizer is actually a combination of the cartridge and the atomizer, which is quite an appropriate name to describe precisely what this component is all about. With older electronic cigarette models, cartridges work with disposable atomizers where the cartridges are disposed once the e-liquid is used up. The atomizers are then disposed of after a thousand puffs, or approximately 5 cartridges.

Cartomizer technology incorporates the atomizer so that the entire component is eventually disposed of when the e-liquid content is completely used up. By design, cartomizers have larger capacity for e-liquid than the older cartridges, which means that one cartomizer can be the equivalent of two packs of traditional tobacco cigarettes on the average, depending on the vaping habits of the vaper. In the scenario of cartridges vs. cartomizers, there is no question that the latter has the advantage.

Cartomizers are also considered by many vapers as extremely reliable because they are not prone to leaking regardless of the weather or environment. By design, they also result in easier drag due to the fact that they do not create suction like what happens with cartridges. Cartridges normally seals the atomizer, making it difficult to drag on, this condition does not exist with cartomizers. In fact, even a light inhale can produce a very satisfying vaping experience with ample vapor and flavor production.

For many vapers, the design of cartomizers is also relatively safe compared to that of cartridges. Because of the penchant of cartridges to leak, there is an inherent danger of children and pets to swallow it and its contents. This would be a safety issue nightmare and would definitely negate the benefits of electronic cigarette use. With cartomizers, they are tightly sealed and virtually nothing gets out except when connected to the battery. Of course, you would need to know how to operate the device to get something out.

The main drawback with cartomizers is that they generally cost more than cartridges. However, when you weigh all the advantages they present over cartridges, it would be easy to conclude that the price is well worth the investment. When considering cartridges vs. cartomizers, it is important to identify cartomizers by their physical appearance, which is usually having screw threading (which may be recessed) at the bottom portion.

When looking for the best vaping experience, the bottom line is being able to balance cartridges vs. cartomizers against the personal preferences of individual vapers.
